Home Remodeling Company Chaska, MN
College City Design-Build Remodel is a home remodeling company Chaska, MN homeowners have hired since 1969. We design and build kitchens, bathrooms, lower levels, and additions, and we do both halves of that job in house so nothing gets lost between the drawing and the framing.
Chaska is not a copy-paste suburb, and remodeling here is not a copy-paste job. A cream brick house near Walnut Street has different problems than a 1970s Jonathan home tucked into mature oaks, and both are different again from a 2005 build near Hazeltine. Our design-build remodeling services start with what your house actually is, not with a template.
Most of our Chaska work falls into two buckets. Older homes with good bones and tired rooms, where a kitchen remodel or a bathroom renovation does most of the heavy lifting. And newer homes that need finishing, usually an unfinished lower level or an addition that the original builder left on the table.
Services:
- Bathroom Remodeling
- Kitchen Remodeling
- Lower Level Remodels
- Whole House Remodels
- Addition and porch
- New Homes
What kinds of homes do you remodel in Chaska?
Chaska has four distinct housing eras, and each one comes with its own remodeling list. Knowing which era your house belongs to tells us most of what we need to know before we ever open a wall.
Historic downtown and Walnut Street. Cream-colored Chaska brick, made from local clay starting in 1857. Eight brickyards were running at the peak, and 40 million bricks came out of Chaska in 1910 alone (Carver County Historical Society). These houses want careful work: masonry that gets respected, systems that get replaced, and a Heritage Preservation Commission review before the exterior changes.
Jonathan, 1967 through the late 1970s. Ground broke on Jonathan in 1967 under Henry T. McKnight, and in 1970 it became the first new town in the United States to get a federal financial guarantee under the Housing and Urban Development Act. The homes sit low and wide on wooded lots with trail access. They also sit on original mechanicals, single-pane glass, and floor plans that assumed a closed kitchen.
Clover Ridge, 1990s onward. Four neighborhoods with different densities and price points: Clover Preserve, Clover Ridge, Traditions at Clover Ridge, and Clover Field. Sound construction, small kitchens, and a lot of unfinished basement square footage.
Hazeltine and the Highway 212 corridor. Newer construction on larger lots. These owners usually come to us for a whole house remodel or a high-end kitchen rather than a repair.
Remodeling services we provide in Chaska
Kitchen remodeling in Chaska
Chaska kitchens built before 1980 almost always share the same flaw: a wall between the cook and everyone else. Opening that wall is the single change that does the most for how a Chaska home lives, and it is where our kitchen team spends most of its design time.
What we build most often here:
- Load-bearing wall removal with proper beam and post design
- Custom and semi-custom cabinetry, including full-height pantry banks
- Islands sized to the room instead of to a catalog
- Quartz, granite, and butcher block counters
- Layered lighting plans, under-cabinet plus pendant plus can
- New flooring in LVP, tile, or hardwood
Bathroom remodeling in Chaska
A Chaska bathroom remodel usually runs 3 to 6 weeks, and the older the house the more of that time goes to what you cannot see. In Jonathan and downtown homes we frequently replace supply lines and vent stacks before a single tile goes down. Our bathroom remodeling work covers:
- Walk-in tile showers with glass enclosures
- Freestanding soaking tubs
- Double vanities
- Heated tile floors, which earn their cost fast in a Carver County winter
- Primary baths built inside the existing footprint
- Full gut renovations on hall and kids’ baths
Lower level and basement finishing in Chaska
An unfinished basement is the cheapest square footage you will ever add to a Chaska home. No foundation, no roof, no permit for an expanded footprint. Our lower level remodels become home theaters, offices, guest suites, wet bars, and gyms.
Two Chaska-specific notes. Properties near the Minnesota River need the moisture plan taken seriously, not just a dehumidifier and hope. And any bedroom below grade needs a compliant egress window, which is a permitted structural cut through the foundation.
Home additions and porches in Chaska
When the footprint stops working, an addition is almost always cheaper than moving, especially in a market where a Chaska address is doing real work for your resale value. We build sunrooms, mudrooms, primary suite additions, and second stories that match the existing rooflines instead of fighting them.
If your home is inside the Jonathan Association, an addition needs Architectural Review Committee approval before construction, then a city permit. We handle both.
Whole house remodeling in Chaska
Some Chaska houses need one plan, not five projects. Our whole house remodeling in Chaska starts with a master design covering the full scope, then runs all at once or in phases depending on whether you are living there through it.
We also build new homes for Chaska clients who decide the lot is worth more than the house on it.
We loved the entire process with finishing our basement at College City! The design process was very efficient and Kali was amazing to work with-she took into consideration my idea books and made the process of selection very easy & fun! The contractors were all very courteous and even kind to our dogs:) We get a ton of compliments on the work that was done-it’s remarkable what they did in our space and we LOVE using it!!

About Chaska, MN
Chaska is the county seat of Carver County, 21 miles southwest of Minneapolis, with a population of 27,810 at the 2020 census. The city motto is “A Quality Small Town,” and unlike most suburbs that claim something similar, Chaska has the downtown to back it up.
The city grew on clay. Brick making started in 1857, and cream-colored Chaska brick ended up in the Minnesota State Capitol, Fort Snelling, the Grain Belt Brewery, and the Minneapolis flour mills before the clay got too expensive to mine in the late 1940s (Carver County Historical Society). Three Woodland-era burial mounds still sit in City Square Park downtown.
Then came Jonathan. In 1966 the Jonathan New Town concept arrived, ground broke in 1967, and by 1970 it was the first new town in the country to receive a federal financing guarantee. The Jonathan Development Corporation folded in 1979 and Chaska annexed the area, but the Jonathan Association survived and is now the largest homeowners association in Minnesota.
For homeowners, the practical picture: schools in Eastern Carver County Schools (ISD 112), Hazeltine National Golf Club and its two PGA Championships and a Ryder Cup, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, the Chaska Curling Center, River City Days every summer, and commuter access on Highways 212 and 41. Remodeling holds its value here.

Frequently Asked Questions — Home Remodeling in Inver Grove Heights
How much does a home remodel cost in Chaska, MN?
A mid-range Chaska kitchen refresh starts around $35,000. Full custom kitchen renovations run $80,000 to $120,000 and up. Bathrooms and lower levels sit below that, whole house projects above it. The biggest cost drivers are layout changes, structural work, and material selections. Our Pricing Tool gives you a project-specific ballpark.
Do I need a permit to remodel my home in Chaska?
Yes for most work. The City of Chaska requires a building permit for any construction, alteration, repair, relocation, enlargement, or demolition regulated by the state building code, including additions, decks, and sheds over 200 square feet. Permits that do not need plan review can be filed through the city’s SmartGov portal. We handle the applications and inspections.
My home is in the Jonathan Association. Do I need approval before remodeling?
Yes. The Jonathan Architectural Review Committee must approve additions, fences, driveways and driveway extensions, siding, and new paint colors before work starts. ARC turnaround should not exceed 7 business days, and a City of Chaska building permit still applies afterward. Some items like storage sheds and re-painting in an existing color do not need ARC approval. We sequence both approvals into the schedule.
What if my home is in Chaska's historic downtown district?
Design-build means a single company handles both the design and construction phases under one contract. Rather than hiring an architect and a contractor separately (who may have different priorities), you work with one integrated team from concept to completion. This reduces miscommunication, speeds up timelines, and keeps accountability in one place.
How long does a kitchen or bathroom remodel take in Chaska?
A standard bathroom runs 3 to 6 weeks. Larger primary baths with custom tile run 6 to 10 weeks. Kitchens vary more because layout and structural changes drive the schedule. You get a detailed timeline during the design phase, before you sign.
